NASA has never explored Earth’s oceans, but it has been monitoring them from space since 1978. The first satellite dedicated to oceanographic research, Seasat, was launched by NASA in 1978. It was equipped with five sensors to measure the height of the spacecraft above the ocean’s surface, wind speed and direction, sea surface temperature, and to identify cloud, land, and water features. Seasat was also able to monitor the polar sea ice conditions. Unfortunately, Seasat’s mission ended after just 105 days due to a short circuit.

In the same year, NASA launched the Tiros-N satellite, which was equipped with an AVHRR sensor. Tiros-N was able to produce the first useful maps of sea surface temperature and the first maps of chlorophyll and primary productivity in the ocean. Since then, there have been several other satellite missions observing the ocean, including the Aquarius mission, the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE-2), and the Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OSTM).

NASA uses the data collected by these satellites to study the impact oceans have on climate change and weather patterns. The agency also uses the data to monitor the global environment and to understand the dynamics of the Earth’s surface. NASA’s satellites have also been used to observe oceans on other planets and moons, such as Europa, a moon of Jupiter.
