Mystic Aquarium, located in Connecticut, has been “home” to a group of beluga whales since May 2021, after they were transferred from Canada’s Marineland. Unfortunately, one of the female belugas is currently in critical condition. This comes after Marineland faced challenges including animal deaths and concerns about water quality.
The aquarium has been providing round-the-clock care, including monitoring the beluga’s blood and white blood cell count, as well as addressing gastrointestinal issues. The beluga has been receiving attention from veterinary experts focused on her recovery. Due to the preexisting gastrointestinal condition, her improvement has been incremental, and health complications such as gastric ulcers may arise.
Throughout this process, the Mystic Aquarium has complied with the necessary permits, respecting the regulations set by organizations like the National Marine Fisheries Service. Despite facing legal battles prior to the transport of the belugas, the facility remains focused on providing top-tier care for the endangered species.
