There have been reports of a salmon shark found washed up on the shores of the Salmon River near Riggins, Idaho. This unexpected discovery raised concerns about the potential impacts on salmon and steelhead populations in the area. Salmon sharks, known for their preference for feeding on salmon, can grow up to 10 feet long and weigh almost 1,000 lbs.

Upon further investigation by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG), it was determined that this incident is most likely a hoax. No sharks have been observed in fish ladders, and the only known shark capable of surviving in freshwater is the bull shark, which is not present in Idaho.

Joe DuPont, an IDFG manager, believes someone placed the shark on the shore as a prank, as it would have made an amusing April Fool’s joke. This reassuring update means that the local salmon and steelhead populations should not be impacted by the presence of sharks in the area.
