Marine researcher Chad Sinden recently spent several hours observing juvenile Lemon sharks in an inland ocean hole surrounded by mangroves in a creek. Sinden patiently waited for the young sharks to approach and interact. Initially, any slight movement would scare the sharks away.
However, after circling Sinden for an extended period, the sharks began to exhibit more curious behavior. Some of them head-butted him, swatted with their tails, and one even attempted a test bite, which resulted in only the loss of a hair follicle—an unsuccessful and non-aggressive nip.
As the sharks grew more comfortable, they started searching for the source of a fish scent emanating from a small piece of fish placed inside a perforated water bottle. Interestingly, Sinden noted that if he picked up the bottle or the fish, the sharks would keep their distance.
He also observed that the juveniles had difficulty pinpointing the exact location of the fish, unlike adult reef sharks, which can zero in on food almost instantly. Sinden hypothesized that these young sharks might still be honing their hunting skills.
The study is particularly significant because Sinden had not previously encountered juvenile Lemon sharks in this area and was eager to study them for personal knowledge.

He identified four individuals in the group, with two or three approaching at any given time. One shark, a young female with distinctive markings on her snout, has become a favorite subject of Sinden.
Throughout the observation, Sinden marveled at the beauty and mesmerizing nature of these creatures, noting that they would often swim gently and calmly around, especially when there was no fish bait involved.

He emphasized that these sharks are shy and hesitant and urged others not to attempt similar interactions, particularly with adult Lemon sharks, as the juveniles in this area were likely encountering a human for the first time.
